Larry married Susan Albrecht, a lifetime WELS member, on August 11, 1984, Emanuel Lutheran (WELS) in Lansing, MI. Larry & Susan have two adult daughters, Stephenie Pingel and Michelle Shaffer. Both Stephenie and Michelle are graduates of Michigan Lutheran Seminary (MLS) and Stephenie is a 2010 graduate of Martin Luther College (MLC). Stephenie & her husband, Mike Pingel (also a 2010 MLC graduate) are members at Mt. Lebanon, Milwaukee, WI; where Mike teaches 4th grade & Stephenie is the piano teacher. Lawrence & Susan have worked with the Director of Special Ministries, Pastor Jim Behringer, to facilitate changes in how information is disseminated to parishioners with visual impairments in light of rapidly changing technology for the blind. Susan has a career of her own which spends 31 years of service with the federal government. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Material Science from Michigan State University in 1983, Susan began her career as a Materials Engineer for the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) for 10 years. Following her time as an Engineer, she worked as a Foreign Military Sales director with NAVAIR. In this position, Susan had to travel to Greece countless times. In 1997, Susan moved from the Navy to the Army where she continues to this day as a Program Manager of the Army Materiel Command’s (AMC) leadership development training program.

In addition to their work as WELS members, Lawrence and Susan are very active in serving the community as leaders in the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) and Lions International. Lawrence has served as a leader in both NFB and Lions, holding chapter, regional and state offices. Lawrence has participated in national leadership training in both NFB and Lions.  Lawrence is also an attorney in private practice.

Larry & Susan enjoy traveling, having traveled to countless countries and taken a number of cruises. They also enjoy hiking, skiing and reading.
